The Hilma Hooker

One of the 50 best wrecks in the world

The Hilma Hooker was sunken in 1984 to provide Bonairean divers with a beautiful wreck within recreational depth. The ship first appeared in our waters anchoring in Klein Bonaire, when it was already illegal, so the Harbor Master contacted the boat captain and they claimed to have a mechanical problem, so they were asked to bring the boat to the pier. As soon as this happened the crew disappeared raising some suspicions regarding their motives to vanish. Customs officers began to check the boat, and did not find anything at first. It took some research to discover the boat had fake walls and hidden inside them, there were 14 tons of marijuana and some cocaine. With this discovery, no one was surprised when nobody claimed responsibility for the boat and with its mechanical problem it was becoming a threat in the pier. The dive operations decided it would be a nice idea to sink it in the double reef system and so they did. The original idea was to sink it vertically as if navigating over the sandy channel in between the two reefs. It was too windy and things got a bit out of control, so the boat started tilting to one side and ended up on starboard side with the bow facing south. This internationally known wreck dive is located near the beginning of the double reef system. The top of the ship lies at 18 meters/60 feet, the mast at 30 meters/100 feet. Divers will find the shallow part of the dive site full of fish. This is a good place to see how corals have developed on an artificial site that was created with the sinking of the ship in 1984. It gives an idea of how long hard corals take to mature.

You will find tarpons and hose eye jacks around the wreck, and quite a few garden eels in the sandy area around the wreck.
